The holidays are coming, and with them come cozy mornings, twinkle lights, parties, family gatherings and a calendar that fills up fast.
It's a season worth enjoying. It's also easy to let our own needs slide to the bottom of the list. Feeling good this season doesn't mean skipping the fun or saying no to every cookie. It means a few small, steady habits that help you feel like you through the busiest stretch of the year.
Here are five ideas from our Holiday Survival Guide to help keep you on track and not feeling like you have to start completely fresh January 1st.
1. Eat Grandma's pie. Skip the Costco cupcake.
Not every treat deserves a spot on your plate. Let that sink in…. the break room donuts, the store-bought cupcakes at the class party, the candy bowl left over from Halloween are usually just there, and they rarely feel worth it.
Save room for the treats that actually mean something to you: Grandma's pie, the cookies you bake with your kids, the dish that only shows up once a year. Enjoy those fully, with zero guilt. And when you do have that pie? Have one piece. Really savor it, then call it good. You don't need a second or third slice, because it doesn't get better with every bite. The tenth bite tastes exactly like the first. One slice enjoyed slowly gives you all the joy without that overstuffed, need-a-nap feeling.
2. Lead with protein
Heading to a holiday party or a big family dinner? Don't "save up" by skipping meals. Showing up starving is the fastest way to feel out of control around the appetizer table.
Start your day with a protein-forward breakfast, like eggs, Greek yogurt or a protein smoothie, and have a snack with protein before you go out. You'll have steadier energy, fewer cravings, and more room to enjoy the food you really want.
3. Keep moving, even if it's less
December isn't the month to chase a new personal record, and that's okay. The goal is to keep your routine from disappearing completely.
Two strength workouts a week is enough to help you hold on to your strength, manage stress and sleep better. Add a stroller walk after a big meal or a family hike on a cold morning, and you're doing more than enough. Some movement always beats none.
4. Drop the all-or-nothing mindset
One big holiday meal doesn't undo your progress, and one missed workout doesn't mean the month is ruined. The "I already blew it, so I'll start over in January" spiral is what really throws us off track.
Your next meal is a fresh start. So is your next workout. Enjoy the celebration, then come back to your normal routine without guilt or punishment.
5. Don't do it alone
Everything is easier with your village. A friend who's expecting you at 5:30 AM, a group chat cheering you on, a coach checking in when life gets busy: that's what keeps you going when motivation runs low.
You don't need more willpower this season. You need support.
